Mark & Tricia Bengel make a good point about Mr. Sullivan’s “pursuit of happiness” and “his” impact on other people.
While his collection of “memorabilia” suffer the elements in silence, not so the loud boom of old “classic” motorcycles. The deafening roar of some bikes “beg” attention as enthusiasts pow-pow along the streets and highways. Everyone offends someone but it is PEACE and SAFETY which come first in the role of government- WE seem to let personal taste and opinion run our lives because we are so much into our own wants and needs. If Mr. Sullivan had 33 acres of Cheatham County, no one would notice his hobby/pursuits. There are so many building and codes violations in our area of a real impact that no one notices-like filling in the streams and rivers and backwoods dumping which affect public health and safety.
I applaud the Bengel letter and his public service but for those in government, I ask that they LOOK at what is important….. Poor Richard’s Almanack reported in 1741 that:
“Beauty, like supreme dominion is but supported by opinion”
One of my favorite expressions: “De gustibus non est disputandum” means: “When it comes to taste, there is no dispute!” To paraphrase the old Charlie tuna commercial- “WE do not want people who taste good, WE want people with good taste!”
I say: ” A man without taste is his own poison….” and ask where did the expression: “If thine eye offends thee, pluck it out” originate?
